VB.NET Database Programming

Visual Basic.NET Database Programming walks the readers step-by-step through the topics they need to know to use databases effectively. This book teaches with real-world scenarios how to load, display, manipulate, modify and save data in databases. It shows the reader how to build multi-tier applications that implement enterprise-wide business solutions, build Web Servers, manage large amounts of data, find specific records, sort data, perform complex queries, and use XML–an integral part of data handling in Visual Basic.NET.
Visual Basic .NET Database Programming explains how you can use databases in your Visual Basic.NET applications. It talks briefly about several different ways a program can manage data but focuses heavily on the most common type of database in use today: a relational database. Using a relational database and Visual Basic .NET, you can build programs that store, modify, find, and display data quickly and easily.
This book does assume you have at least some familiarity with some version of Visual Basic. If you have never used Visual Basic before, you might want to start with a more general Visual Basic book. After you know a little about Visual Basic, you can read this book without becoming bogged down in syntactic details.
If you have used a previous version of Visual Basic, ASP, or VBScript, you will be able to follow the examples in this book easily. While Visual Basic .NET and previous versions of Visual Basic have many differences, they are similar enough that you should have few problems understanding the code. Some of the details may be new to you, but the major database concepts will be clear. Appendix B, "The VB .NET Development Environment," contains a quick primer to help you get used to some of the new development environment features.
