JRR Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings Collection and The Hobbit

The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by English academic J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier fantasy book, The Hobbit, and soon developed into a much larger story. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, with much of it being created during World War II. It was originally published in three volumes in 1954 and 1955 (much to Tolkien's annoyance, since he had intended it to be a single volume). It has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into at least 38 languages, becoming one of the most popular works in 20th-century literature.

Enjoy!

  • Java Web Services

At the end of the day, Web Services aren’t hard to conceptualise. Implementation is another story, however. Java Web Services does a very good job of dispersing the confusing terminology (and obfuscating hype) and showing you exactly how to do Web Services work in Java. This doesn’t sound like a revolutionary concept, but unfortunately it is. David Chappell and Tyler Jewell have comfortably fit into less than 250 pages what others have not done as well in twice as much space.Take Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) work as an example. UDDI exists to help software locate other software that does what it wants. How do you do that? Chappell and Jewell present two concise program listings–a client and a server–that show how to do an UDDI lookup. They then refine their code by using a third-party API that makes the work easier. Similarly pragmatic attention goes to Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), in which they show how to create a message, populate it with XML, make an attachment if necessary and send it on its way. You’ll not find a lot of frills or conceptual explanations (though there are enough “why” sections to ensure that you’re not just typing recipes blindly)–the emphasis is on writing Java code that interacts with Web Services protocols and standards. –David Wall

  • SCJP Exam with JS2E

Best selling author, Paul Sanghera, offers cohesive, concise, yet comprehensive coverage of all the topics included in the Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 exam (CX 310-055). With a laser sharp focus on the exam objectives, the Study Guide goes beyond just being an “exam cram.” The material is presented in a logical learning sequence: a section builds upon previous sections and a chapter on previous chapters. All concepts, simple and complex, are defined and explained when they appear the first time. There is no hopping from topic to topic and no technical jargon without explanation. No prior knowledge of Java programming is assumed. The single most difficult aspect of this exam is to read and understand the code in the exam questions in a limited amount of time. To help you get fluent and comfortable with the code, the book offers complete runnable code examples distributed over all the chapters and a codewalk quicklet feature at the end of each chapter.

  • Sams Teach Yourself Programming with Java in 24 Hours

Sams Teach Yourself Programming with Java in 24 Hours is a step-by-step tutorial that teaches someone with no previous programming experience how to create simple Java programs and applets. A great starting point for learning Java, it is a great primer to reading Sams Teach Yourself Java in 21 Days, since it takes things at a slower pace, focusing on key programming concepts and essential Java basics. Although the basic structure of the book, and many of its examples, remains the same in this new edition, the author makes use of dozens of reader comments to make improvements to explanatory text and example programs. This new edition of the book maintains and improves upon all the qualities of the original edition, while updating, revising, and reorganizing the material to cover the latest developments in Java and to expand the book’s coverage of core Java programming topics.

  • Java 1.4 Game Programming

This book, will teach you the java language with a game programming orientation.
This book does not have any complete game inside.
Anyway it’s a good book and you can use it to learn java taking into consideration the game programming goal.
What i appriciated is the practical and clear approach.
Many customers will be disappointed because the title says game programming and because of that, the authors are supposed to furnish some game inside.
The right title for this book is ,
“Learn java 1.4 with a game programming perspective”, or something like that(”Introduction to java game programming” would be better), because in the book they cover the whole language and not only the game programming stuff.

  • Developing Games in Java

If you already have Java programming experience and are looking to program games, this book is for you. David Brackeen, along with co-authors Bret Barker and Lawrence Vanhelsuwe, show you how to make fast, full-screen action games such as side scrollers and 3D shooters. Key features covered in this book include Java 2 game programming techniques, including latest 2D graphics and sound technologies, 3D graphics and scene management, path-finding and artificial intelligence, collision detection, game scripting using BeanShell, and multi-player game engine creation.

  • Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0

As many Java developers and IS managers already know, Sun’s powerful Enterprise JavaBean (EJB) technology offers an attractive option for developing server-side components. A suitable read for both managers and Java programmers, Enterprise JavaBeans provides a surprisingly clear and engaging introduction to designing and programming with EJBs.The tour of the EJB component model presented here centres on several beans created and tested for a travel reservation system in a fictitious cruise ship company. The samples are just right in scale, large enough to test out key concepts in design and deployment, but small enough to be comprehensible, even to those who are not Java experts. The author pays good attention to the real-world issues of deployment with EJBs (as well as the differences between vendors application servers which run them).

  • Java 2: The Complete Reference

For a supposedly easy-to-use language Java has generated a range of enormous books. The ever excellent Schildt continues the tradition–even allowing for the added coverage of Java 1.3–in this 1,000+ word tome.Schildt divides the book into four parts. The first third is a solid tutorial on Java programming with neat code examples showing how various features work. Nearly half is taken up with a detailed view of the Java Library followed by 150 pages on Java software development. The last section dissects four Java applets.

  • Black Art of Java Game Programming: Creating Dynamic Games and Interactive Graphical Environments Using Java

Designing of a great game takes much more than the reading of a good programming book. A game needs a story, fantastic graphics and many other non-programming assets. This range of input is probably only manageable if you have a number of developers. A group of friends will probably go far with this book. E.g. a programmer, a graphic designer and the kind of person who downloads and uses level editors. The object oriented design is quite excellent. Some books are quite weak at showing you how to create and manipulate objects, this book however is a gem. Object Orientation lends itself well to game design. This book exploits that fact and right from the start you will use inheritance and polymorphism to your advantage. This is only sensible, but you will find in many books such subjects only get a couple of paragraphs. I feel for this reason that many programmers new to Java/OOP would find this book very useful.

  • The Java Tutorial: A Short Course on the Basics

A hands-on guide to the Java programming language, “The Java’ Tutorial, Fourth Edition”, is perfect for any developer looking for a proven path to proficiency with Java SE. This popular tutorial “from the Source” has been completely revised and updated to cover Version 6 of the Java Platform, Standard Edition. Written by members of the Java Software team at Sun Microsystems, this book uses a tested, interactive approach and features real-world problems that help you learn the Java platform by example. New to this edition are chapters on Generics, Collections, Java Web Start, the Platform Environment, and Regular Expressions. Key sections, including the Concurrency (formerly Threads), I/O, Object-Oriented Programming Concepts, and Language Basics chapters have been completely rewritten to reflect reader feedback and to cover new features added to the Java SE 6 platform. A new appendix contains information on how to prepare for the Java Programming Language Certification exam.
