Spinning the Semantic Web: Bringing the World Wide Web to Its Full Potential

As the World Wide Web continues to expand, it becomes increasingly difficult for users to obtain information efficiently. Because most search engines read format languages such as HTML or SGML, search results reflect formatting tags more than actual page content, which is expressed in natural language. Spinning the Semantic Web describes an exciting new type of hierarchy and standardization that will replace the current "web of links" with a "web of meaning." Using a flexible set of languages and tools, the Semantic Web will make all available information — display elements, metadata, services, images, and especially content — accessible. The result will be an immense repository of information accessible for a wide range of new applications. This first handbook for the Semantic Web covers, among other topics, software agents that can negotiate and collect information, markup languages that can tag many more types of information in a document, and knowledge systems that enable machines to read Web pages and determine their reliability. The truly interdisciplinary Semantic Web combines aspects of artificial intelligence, markup languages, natural language processing, information retrieval, knowledge representation, intelligent agents, and databases.

  • Real-Time Systems Development

Real-time Systems Development is a text for computing students who want to understand more about the development of software for real-time applications, involving concurrent programming, multi-tasking, data i/o and embedded processors. The book has been written to cover single semester final year undergraduate options or MSc modules in the area of real-time systems design and implementation. Assuming a certain level of general systems design and programming experience, this text will extend students knowledge and skills into an area of computing which has increasing relevance in a modern world of telecommunications and intelligent equipment using embedded microcontrollers…

    * Concise treatment delivers material in manageable sections
    * Includes handy glossary, references and practical exercises based on familiar scenarios
    * Supporting website contains slides, solutions to problems and software examples

As more and more of our daily technology depends on embedded microprocessors, the demand for good real-time software has grown enormously. So it is unfortunate that computer science students frequently only develop and run programs on standard desktop Windows platforms. This leaves them somewhat unprepared for the extra problems encountered should they end up producing code for a new DVD player, a mobile handset or an Internet packet router. This text reveals some of the particular difficulties encountered when designing for real-time systems, and the alternative routes available for software realization. It is perhaps a shame that so few programmers have the opportunity to study the science and art of real-time systems before being confronted by their first real-time project. As a large proportion of new domestic and leisure equipment relies on microprocessors for basic operations, the world might be a safer and less frustrating experience for all of us if this situation could be rectified.

  • Secure Programming with Static Analysis

The First Expert Guide to Static Analysis for Software Security! Creating secure code requires more than just good intentions. Programmers need to know that their code will be safe in an almost infinite number of scenarios and configurations. Static source code analysis gives users the ability to review their work with a fine-toothed comb and uncover the kinds of errors that lead directly to security vulnerabilities. Now, there’s a complete guide to static analysis: how it works, how to integrate it into the software development processes, and how to make the most of it during security code review. Static analysis experts Brian Chess and Jacob West look at the most common types of security defects that occur today. They illustrate main points using Java and C code examples taken from real-world security incidents, showing how coding errors are exploited, how they could have been prevented, and how static analysis can rapidly uncover similar mistakes. This book is for everyone concerned with building more secure software: developers, security engineers, analysts, and testers.

  • LabVIEW Advanced Programming Techniques, Second Edition

Whether seeking deeper knowledge of LabVIEW®'s capabilities or striving to build enhanced VIs, professionals know they will find everything they need in LabVIEW: Advanced Programming Techniques. Updated to reflect the functionalities and changes made to LabVIEW Version 8.0, this second edition delves deeply into the enhancements that continue to make LabVIEW one of the most popular and widely used graphical programming environments across the engineering community. LabVIEW's new features are by no means trivial and neither are the updates made to the new edition of this popular bestseller. The authors introduce the changes to the front panel controls, the Standard State Machine template, new drivers, the instrument I/O assistant, new error handling functions, hyperthreading, and Express VIs. A new chapter mirrors the introduction of the Shared Variables function in LabVIEW 8.0 and a new section explores the LabVIEW project view. The chapter on ActiveX was revised to include discussion of the Microsoft™ .NET® framework and new examples of programming in LabVIEW using .NET. Numerous illustrations and step-by-step explanations provide hands-on guidance. Reflecting not only changes to LabVIEW but also to the programming environment in general, LabVIEW: Advanced Programming Techniques, Second Edition remains an indispensable resource to help programmers take their LabVIEW knowledge to the next level.

  • International Economic Indicators and Central Banks

Divided into two comprehensive parts, International Economic Indicators and Central Banks offers detailed coverage of the primary indicators that major industrial countries—from Canada, China, Japan, and Australia to Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom—use to evaluate economic performance, and examines how their central banks create and carry out monetary policy. The European Monetary Union is also included in this discussion, since it is the umbrella organization for the three European countries covered here.

International Economic Indicators and Central Banks opens with a brief description of the bond, stock, and foreign exchange markets—since this is where investors respond to the news of central bank activities and the direction of economic indicators. Following this market introduction, Part I moves on to provide you with an eye-opening overview of central bank functions, and then hones in on the individual central banks of the countries previously mentioned. Here, you'll discover how these central banks operate, and why they influence economies and your investments.

Part II of the book deals with the nitty-gritty of market-moving international economic indicators—from where to find them and what they mean to when they're released. With each chapter devoted to a different country, you'll become familiar with indicators that are reliable gauges of a country's economic growth and discover how similar indicators may differ across geographical borders. Some of the indicators addressed include the United Kingdom's Gross Domestic Product statistics, Canada's Labour Force Survey (LFS), and Japan's Tankan Survey.
