Mesh Parameterization Methods And Their Applications

Mesh Parameterization Methods And Their Applications

Product Description
Parameterizations between surface meshes and a variety of domains have numerous applications in computer graphics and geometry processing. In recent years numerous methods for parameterizing meshes have been developed, targeting diverse parameter domains and focusing on different parameterization properties. Mesh Parameterization Methods and their Applications reviews the various parameterization methods, summarizing the main ideas of each technique and focusing on the practical aspects of the methods.

It also provides examples of the results generated by many of the more popular methods. When several methods address the same parameterization problem, the survey strives to provide an objective comparison between them based on criteria such as parameterization quality, efficiency and robustness. Mesh Parameterization Methods and their Applications provides guidance to researchers and developers when assessing the suitability of different methods for various applications. The authors focus on the practical aspects of the methods available, such as time complexity and robustness. They also provide multiple examples of parameterizations generated using different methods, allowing the reader to visually evaluate and compare the results.

 Scientific Collaboration on the Internet

Scientific Collaboration on the Internet

Product Description
Modern science is increasingly collaborative, as signaled by rising numbers of coauthored papers, papers with international coauthors, and multi-investigator grants. Historically, scientific collaborations were carried out by scientists in the same physical location—the Manhattan Project of the 1940s, for example, involved thousands of scientists gathered on a remote plateau in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Today, information and communication technologies allow cooperation among scientists from far-flung institutions and different disciplines. Scientific Collaboration on the Internet provides both broad and in-depth views of how new technology is enabling novel kinds of science and engineering collaboration. The book offers commentary from notable experts in the field along with case studies of large-scale collaborative projects, past and ongoing.

The projects described range from the development of a national virtual observatory for astronomical research to a National Institutes of Health funding program for major multilaboratory medical research; from the deployment of a cyberinfrastructure to connect experts in earthquake engineering to partnerships between developed and developing countries in AIDS research. The chapter authors speak frankly about the problems these projects encountered as well as the successes they achieved. The book strikes a useful balance between presenting the real stories of collaborations and developing a scientific approach to conceiving, designing, implementing, and evaluating such projects. It points to a future of scientific collaborations that build successfully on aspects from multiple disciplines.

An introduction using LISP

The elements of artificial intelligence: An introduction using LISP

The purpose of this book is to provide an up-to-date and didactically coherent introduction to the principles and programming methods of artificial intelligence. It is appropriate for an undergraduate or first-year graduate course. While it is possible for the student to get acquainted with artificial intelligence in a single quarter or semester, a sequence of two to three quarters or semesters is preferable.

The author covers most of the material in two academic quarters at the University of Washington. During the first quarter, Chapters 1 through 6 or 7 are tackled, laying a foundation of symbol manipulation, knowledge representation and inference. The second quarter takes on the more advanced topics: learning, natural language understanding, vision and the integration of AI technology into expert systems.
If programming is to be given a heavy emphasis, the material can be spread over more than two quarters; more of the problems may be assigned, and the instructor may wish to spend some time discussing various aspects of the assignments. In the final term of a two- or three-course sequence, a term project by each student, which can grow out of one of the programs provided in the text, can be very successful.
Unlike other AI texts, The Elements of Artificial Intelligence integrates the presentation of principles with actual runnable LISP illustrations. I have attempted to implement a large enough fraction of these ideas in fully-presented LISP programs to allow the student to gain enough intuition through experiment to support his/her understanding of all the principles covered…

A Desktop Quick Reference

Statistics in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference

Product Description
Need to learn statistics as part of your job, or want some help passing a statistics course? Statistics in a Nutshell is a clear and concise introduction and reference that’s perfect for anyone with no previous background in the subject. This book gives you a solid understanding of statistics without being too simple, yet without the numbing complexity of most college texts.
You get a firm grasp of the fundamentals and a hands-on understanding of how to apply them before moving on to the more advanced material that follows. Each chapter presents you with easy-to-follow descriptions illustrated by graphics, formulas, and plenty of solved examples. Before you know it, you’ll learn to apply statistical reasoning and statistical techniques, from basic concepts of probability and hypothesis testing to multivariate analysis.

Organized into four distinct sections, Statistics in a Nutshell offers you:

    Introductory material:

  • Different ways to think about statistics
  • Basic concepts of measurement and probability theory
  • Data management for statistical analysis
  • Research design and experimental design
  • How to critique statistics presented by others
  • Basic inferential statistics:

  • Basic concepts of inferential statistics
  • The concept of correlation, when it is and is not an appropriate measure of association
  • Dichotomous and categorical data
  • The distinction between parametric and nonparametric statistics
  • Advanced inferential techniques:

  • The General Linear Model
  • Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and MANOVA
  • Multiple linear regression
  • Specialized techniques:

  • Business and quality improvement statistics
  • Medical and public health statistics
  • Educational and psychological statistics

Unlike many introductory books on the subject, Statistics in a Nutshell doesn’t omit important material in an effort to dumb it down. And this book is far more practical than most college texts, which tend to over-emphasize calculation without teaching you when and how to apply different statistical tests.

With Statistics in a Nutshell, you learn how to perform most common statistical analyses, and understand statistical techniques presented in research articles. If you need to know how to use a wide range of statistical techniques without getting in over your head, this is the book you want.
