Folklorist Angus Gillespie examines the development and daily life of the World Trade Center in New York. He covers how the engineers solved complex problems, and the contrast between the architectural community’s disdain and the public acceptance of the towers as a symbol of New York. (more…)
Kengo Kuma: Selected Works
Product Description
Evanescent. Restrained. Ethereal. These are some of the words used to describe the architecture of Kengo Kuma, one of the most heralded of a new generation of Japanese architects. A recent article in Architecture writes of Kuma that “he strives to give his buildings the qualities of a rainbow, composed of shimmering particles, more illusion than object, that change as you look at them.” Increasingly the focus of international renown, Kuma’s work is characterized by a delicate simplicity and minimalism, incorporating a wide range of ephemeral transparencies.
Their ineffable vibrancy is achieved largely by the extensive and skillful use of screens: metal, wooden, bamboo, and even stone louvers or slates, as well as paper, plastic, and glass surfaces or membranes. His use of new, sophisticated, and efficient technologies, his sensitivity to site, and his attention to the ecological and prevailing social context of his work are all explored in Kengo Kuma: Selected Works, the first full-length monograph on the work of this enormous talent. Included are all of Kuma’s most recent projects, including the Museum of Ando Hiroshige, the Stone Museum, the Horai Onsen Bath House in Atami, Louis Vuitton Tokyo Headquarters, and the Nagasaki Prefectural Museum. Kengo Kuma: Selected Works is an essential addition to the library of anyone interested in the best contemporary architecture.
Heritage or Heresy: Preservation and Destruction of Religious Art and Architecture in Europe
Product Description
Heritage or Heresy takes a fresh look at the concept of cultural heritage and reminds us why it matters. Schildgen delves deep into the manifestation of iconoclasm in local and national movements and takes into account the role of memory and regret in the destruction or preservation of the architectural, artistic, and historic legacy of Europe. After a close inspection, she argues that the idea of secularism and mutual tolerance born in the Enlightenment provided the basis for the modern commitment that regards all natural and cultural patrimony as the shared heritage of all humanity.

The Walls of Rome (Fortress)
Product Description
Having defeated a Germanic invasion of northern Italy, the Emperor Aurelian surrounded Rome with a powerful circuit of walls. This great fortification is one of the best preserved of all city walls in the Roman Empire and remains a dramatic feature of Rome today, representing the most emblematic and the most enduring monument of Aurelian’s age.
Nothing else so eloquently demonstrates that, by Aurelian’s day, the empire was on the defensive. Although embellished, strengthened and restored many times down the ages, Aurelian’s original structure remained the basis of the city’s defences through to the mid-19th century, when the Republican forces under Giuseppe Garibaldi managed for some time to withstand the French, and is still discernible today along much of the walls’ circuit.
This title describes Aurelian’s Wall in detail with cut-away cross sections, and investigates its historical purpose and military effectiveness within the general context of late Roman fortifications. A final section follows the history of the Wall’s continued use beyond the Romano-Byzantine period, and provides an invaluable tourist aid.

Transactions on High-Performance Embedded Architectures and Compilers II
Product Description
Transactions on HiPEAC aims at the timely dissemination of research contributions in computer architecture and compilation methods for high-performance embedded computer systems. Recognizing the convergence of embedded and general-purpose computer systems, this journal publishes original research on systems targeted at specific computing tasks as well as systems with broad application bases. The scope of the journal therefore covers all aspects of computer architecture, code generation and compiler optimization methods of interest to researchers and practitioners designing future embedded systems.
This second issue contains 15 papers carefully reviewed and selected out of 31 submissions and is divided into two sections. The first section contains extended versions of the top five papers from the 2nd International Conference on High-Performance Embedded Architectures and Compilers (HiPEAC 2007) held in Ghent, Belgium, in January 2007. The second section consists of ten papers covering topics such as microarchitecture, memory systems, code generation, and performance modeling.
Basic Structures for Engineers and Architects
Product Description
This book provides students of civil engineering and architecture with a grounding in the fundamentals of structures, and a ‘feel’ for the way buildings behave structurally. The book aims to explain structural concepts clearly, using analogies and examples to illustrate the points, and it expresses mathematical aspects of the subject in a straightforward way.
Building on Knowledge: Developing Expertise, Creativity and Intellectual Capital in the Construction Professions
Product Description
This guide shows design practices and other construction professionals how to manage knowledge successfully. It explains how to develop and implement a knowledge management strategy, and how to avoid the pitfalls, focusing on the techniques of learning and knowledge sharing that are most relevant in professional practice. Expensive IT-based ‘solutions’ bought off-the-shelf rarely succeed in a practice context, so the emphasis here is on people-centred techniques, which recognise and meet real business knowledge needs and fit in with the organisational culture.
Knowledge is supplanting physical assets as the dominant basis of capital value and an understanding of how knowledge is acquired, shared and used is increasingly crucial in organisational success. Most business leaders recognise this, but few have yet succeeded in making it the pervasive influence on management practice that it needs to become; that has turned out to be harder than it looks.
Construction professionals are among those who have furthest to go, and most to gain. Design is a knowledge-based activity, and project managers, contractors and clients, as well as architects and engineers, have always learned from experience and shared their knowledge with immediate colleagues. But the intuitive processes they have traditionally used break down alarmingly quickly as organisations grow; even simply dividing the office over two floors can noticeably reduce communication. At the same time, increasingly sophisticated construction technology and more demanding markets are making effective management of knowledge ever more important. Other knowledge-intensive industries (such as management consultancy, pharmaceuticals, and IT), are well ahead in adopting a more systematic approach to learning and sharing knowledge, and seeing the benefits in improved technical capacity, efficiency, customer satisfaction and reduced risk.
