When you need to get the job done fast, you’ll reach for this
practical, nuts-n-bolts toolkit. Rather than focusing on ActionScript
in the abstract, this Cookbook puts theory into practice with
ready-made answers to common ActionScript problems. Flash MX developers
can solve issues quickly, while learning practical techniques for
resolving similar dilemmas in the future. ActionScript has blossomed
into a large and important language whose sheer volume of capabilities
can be daunting. The ActionScript Cookbook
breaks it all down into tasks that are relevant, practical, and
insightful. Appealing to the budding coder as well as the experienced
ActionScript jockeys, this book offers new perspectives and approaches
to ActionScript development that will empower all developers. This
O’Reilly Cookbook complements ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide,
2nd Edition by providing quick solutions to common ActionScript
problems. This book trades on our respected “Cookbook” approach, which
provides a worked-out script for every problem addressed. You can use
these “recipes” to solve an immediate problem, and then explore the
issue further in The Definitive Guide when time permits. The ActionScript Cookbook contains over 300 recipes on a myriad of topics. Here’s a sampling of what you’ll find:

  • Drawing shapes at runtime
  • Controlling movie clips programmatically
  • Accepting user input and manipulating text strings
  • Accessing audio and video via Flash Communications Server
  • Working with Flash Remoting to connect to back end databases
  • Using record sets with data grids
  • And, much, much more in over 20 recipe-laden chapters…

Welcome to ActionScript 2.0 Garage . The goal of this book is to make
learning ActionScript more fun. A lot more fun. Okay, it’s not a big
dream, but it’s my dream. I’m not kidding. The goal of this book is to
show beginning to intermediate ActionScript programmers how to take
their skills to the next level and blast out some amazing code. The
code samples in here are actual working chunks of code, not
just for computer books but no one would EVER use this-in the real
world stuff. That, and I attempted to have something of a (gasp)
personality (shriek) while talking about code. I’m aiming for “helpful
smart-alec” (or “chaotic good” if you’re old-school). Who This Book Is
For This book is for beginning to intermediate ActionScript programmers
who want a quick, friendly way to get deeper into ActionScript code. If
you don’t know what trace() is, put this book down right now before you
hurt somebody. I’m not kidding. Right now! Who This Book Isn’t For
Junkies. Heiresses. Shepherds. I make fun of George Lucas a few times,
and maybe Orlando Bloom too–I can’t remember for sure. (He was great
in Troy , you know. He did a wonderful job in the role of Helen.)
What’s in the Book This book has everything from arrays to objects to
how to manipulate components: Component skins. Styles. Functions. Best
practices. Lots and lots of code and working examples. You can download
everything from www.wire-man.com/garage. What’s Not in the Book Data
components don’t really involve ActionScript, so I left them out. I
don’t cover advanced object-oriented anything or how to use the
animation bits of the Flash program. About the Attitude You may notice
this tome’s tone is a little rougher than other computer books you’ve
read. That’s because we want this book to make learning fun , so we
decided to spice it up a bit. If you go through the book and don’t
learn a thing about ActionScript, I hope you’re at least a little
entertained. (Update: I just got word that my editor has toned down the
profanity and numerous pornography references, so perhaps it’s a tad
less entertaining now.

Review

Published reviews of current edition:

“If
you are looking into how to create online games and getting a better
understanding of the powerful language that Actionscript is, you could
do a lot worse than this book. The examples and explanations are clear
and thorough… Nik does a good job of keeping the pace upbeat and
making the reader feel involved… for those people who are interested
in how to make games and how to improve their coding, it is a
worthwhile investment.”

Ready to take your Flash knowledge to the next level? Then Macromedia Flash MX Advanced for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide is your ticket. Designed for professionals like yourself-users who have mastered the basics of Flash but need help with the advanced animation techniques and ActionScripting–this guide is a must-have for graphic designers, Web animators, game programmers, interface designers, and multimedia pros.

In this volume, veteran Flash instructor Russell Chun eschews “cool effects” and case studies for an approach that emphasizes methodology and problem-solving. Using the task-based format that readers have come to expect from this popular series, Russell has divided the text into three primary sections: animation, navigation, and interactivity. The guide covers all of Flash’s new features, including the revamped user interface, brand-new commands, and added drawing and text tools. Plus, you’ll find plenty of screen shots and visual aids to reinforce the text. With Flash MX Advanced for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide by your side, you’ll soon find yourself thinking–maybe even dreaming–in Flash.
