Wireless Operational Security

Wireless Operational SecurityThis comprehensive wireless network book addresses the operational and day-to-day security management requirements of 21st century companies. Wireless networks can easily be reconfigured, are very mobile, allow for potentially nonstop exposure, and require the level of security be scrutinized even more than for wired networks. This includes inherent security flaws in various wireless architectures that result in additional risks to otherwise secure converged wired networks. An even worse scenario is one where an insecure wireless network is connected to a weakly secured or insecure wired network and the wireless subnet is not separated from the wired subnet. There are approximately a dozen popular books that cover components of the architecture, design, theory, issues, challenges, and recommended policies for wireless security, none of which address them in a practical, operationally-oriented and comprehensive way. Wireless Operational Security bridges this gap.

Communication Systems For The Mobile Information Society

book cover

Wireless technologies such as GSM/UMTS, wireless LAN,802.16(WiMAX),and Bluetooth have revolutionized the way we communicate and exchange data by making services like telephony and Internet access available at anytime and from almost any where.Today, agreat variety of technical publications offer background information about these technologies but they all fall short in one way or another. Books covering these technologies usually describe only one of the systems in detail and are generally too complex as a first introduction. The Internet is also a good source, but the articles one finds are usually too short and superficial or only deal with a specific mechanism of one of the systems. Because of this, it was difficult for me to recommend a single publication to students in my telecommunication classes, which I’ve been teaching in addition to my chosen profession as a wireless systems consultant. This book aims to change this.

All wireless technologies discussed in the book continue to evolve, with increasing transmission speeds being the driving goal. This book covers some of the evolutions such as HSDPA and HSUPA enhancements, which deliver increased transmission speeds in UMTS networks, and EDGE, which does the same thing for GPRS. As WiMAX already offers high transmission speeds for stationary users (802.16d), the evolution path of this system introduces mobility. Therefore, the mobility extension of WiMAX (802.16e) is also discussed.

  • Fundamentals of WiMAX - Prentice Hall PTR

Fundamentals of WiMAX - Prentice Hall PTR

The Definitive Guide to WiMAX Technology WiMAX is the most promising new technology for broadband wireless access to IP services. It can serve an extraordinary range of applications and environments: data, voice, and multimedia; fixed and mobile; licensed and unlicensed. However, until now, wireless professionals have had little reliable information to guide them. Fundamentals of WiMAX is the first comprehensive guide to WiMAX–its technical foundations, features, and performance.

Three leading wireless experts systematically cut through the hype surrounding WiMAX and illuminate the realities. They combine complete information for wireless professionals and basic, accessible knowledge for non-experts. Professionals will especially appreciate their detailed discussion of the performance of WiMAX based on comprehensive link- and system-level simulations.

Whether you're a wireless engineer, network architect, manager, or system designer, this book delivers essential information for succeeding with WiMAX–from planning through deployment.

  • 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide

As a network administrator, architect, or security professional, you need to understand the capabilities, limitations, and risks associated with integrating wireless LAN technology into your current infrastructure. 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide provides all the information necessary to analyze and deploy wireless networks with confidence.

Over the past five years, the world has become increasingly mobile. Traditional ways of networking have altered to accommodate new lifestyles and ways of working. Wireless networks offer several advantages over fixed (or wired) networks, with mobility, flexibility, ease and speed of deployment, and low-cost at the top of the list. Large productivity gains are possible when developers, students, and professionals are able to access data on the move. Ad-hoc meetings in the lunch room, library, or across the street in the café allow you to develop ideas collaboratively and act on them right away. Wireless networks are typically very flexible, which can translate into rapid deployment. Once the infrastructure is in place, adding new users is just a matter of authorization.

  • Design and Performance of 3G Wireless Networks and Wireless LANs

Design and Performance of 3G Wireless Networks and Wireless LANsDesign and Performance of 3G Wireless Networks and Wireless LANs is for wireless communication system engineers, network engineers, professionals, and researchers. Network architectures of UMTS, CDMA2000 systems, and how major network elements within the 3G networks can be designed, are described. In addition, the authors describe how end-to-end performance for voice and data services can be determined. They also provide guidelines on how radio access networks and core networks can be engineered. Of equal importance, is inclusion of explanations of various wireless LAN standards (IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11e) and how voice and data services can be offered in the wireless LAN systems. Additional highlights include: - Overview of core principles of wireless communications (e.g., FDMA, TDMA, CDMA), airlink capacity analysis, and evaluation. - Traffic model descriptions and illustrations for circuit-switched and packet-switched services. - In-depth coverage of how base station and radio network controller can be designed to meet capacity requirements. - Discussion of unique design issues in 3G networks, innovative solutions, and possible new 3G features. This material also provides capacity engineering guidelines for 3G networks and wireless LANs. Review exercises are provided at the end of each chapter to facilitate teaching and self study.
