What Architects & Industrial Designers Can Teach Each Other About Managing the Design Process

What Architects & Industrial Designers Can Teach Each Other About Managing the Design Process

Product Description
Nowadays, the script of life is for a large part written by architects and designers. Urban planning decides how we spread our activities geographical. The design of modern residential districts determines for a large part how we communicate with each other. The design of shopping centers determines how we acquire our food.

Designers for means of transport decide how we move ourselves and kitchen designers decide how we cook. All this has to do with the mechanisms of technology diffusion which will be elaborated on in this publication. The main issues discussed are the contemporary inter-relationship of industrial design and architecture and a confrontation of contemporary design practice in both domains with academic theory and education. The cases used for this publication provide several examples of the various characters of design processes. The subjects of the cases discussed in Design Processes are design processes in general, visualization as a design tool, project management, social complexity collaboration, decision making and technology diffusion.

Transactions on High-Performance Embedded Architectures and Compilers II

Transactions on High-Performance Embedded Architectures and Compilers II

Product Description

Transactions on HiPEAC aims at the timely dissemination of research contributions in computer architecture and compilation methods for high-performance embedded computer systems. Recognizing the convergence of embedded and general-purpose computer systems, this journal publishes original research on systems targeted at specific computing tasks as well as systems with broad application bases. The scope of the journal therefore covers all aspects of computer architecture, code generation and compiler optimization methods of interest to researchers and practitioners designing future embedded systems.

This second issue contains 15 papers carefully reviewed and selected out of 31 submissions and is divided into two sections. The first section contains extended versions of the top five papers from the 2nd International Conference on High-Performance Embedded Architectures and Compilers (HiPEAC 2007) held in Ghent, Belgium, in January 2007. The second section consists of ten papers covering topics such as microarchitecture, memory systems, code generation, and performance modeling.

GIS Applications for Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Systems

GIS Applications for Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Systems

Product Description
Professionals involved in the planning, design, operation, and construction of water, wastewater, and stormwater systems need to understand the productivity-enhancing applications of GIS. Inspired by an ASCE-sponsored continuing education course taught by the author, GIS Applications for Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Systems focuses on the practical aspects of software and data tools that enable GIS applications. The book documents and analyzes effective use of GIS, demonstrating how you can apply the technology to make tasks easier to perform, saving time and money for your organization.

The book first describes GIS, detailing its importance and explaining how to avoid potential pitfalls via a needs analysis study. It then describes GIS-related technologies that are crucial in applications development: remote sensing; DEM data; GPS; Internet applications; and mobile GIS. The final ten chapters focus on the “Four Ms” of the water industry-Mapping, Monitoring, Modeling, and Maintenance-applications that define the most important activities for efficient management of water, wastewater, and stormwater systems.

Promoting a performance- (or outcome-) based style of learning, each chapter first states learning objectives and later concludes with a chapter summary and questions. The text encourages more effective and natural inductive study by first presenting case studies, then explaining procedures. This volume supplements the text with numerous maps, tables, and illustrations.

· Focuses on the practical aspects of software and data tools that enable productivity-enhancing GIS applications

· Incorporates the recommendations of ABET and ASCE’s Excellence in Civil Engineering Education program

· Includes models, software, examples, and case studies derived from projects managed by the author and other GIS experts

· Discusses GIS applications useful for protecting water and wastewater systems from terrorist attacks

· Presents a collection of recent case studies from around the world

Product Description

The objective of this book is to present an uncertainty modeling approach using a new type of fuzzy system model via “Fuzzy Functions”. Since most researchers on fuzzy systems are more familiar with the standard fuzzy rule bases and their inference system structures, many standard tools of fuzzy system modeling approaches are reviewed to demonstrate the novelty of the structurally different fuzzy functions, before we introduced the new methodologies. To make the discussions more accessible, no special fuzzy logic and system modeling knowledge is assumed. Therefore, the book itself may be a reference for some related methodologies to most researchers on fuzzy systems analyses.

For those readers, who have knowledge of essential fuzzy theories, Chapter 1, 2 should be treated as a review material. Advanced readers ought to be able to read chapters 3, 4 and 5 directly, where proposed methods are presented. Chapter 6 demonstrates experiments conducted on various datasets.
