In a first course in Computer Science, the primary goal is to teach the fundamentals of the field. Basic concepts are introduced with the help of a programming language that is often viewed as simply a medium through which algorithms are expressed. From that perspective, it does not matter which language is used in an introductory course, because any would suffice. In practice, however, the language can have a profound impact on the students’ learning experience. First, the style of the language constrains the way and the order in which topics can be introduced. Further, the language taught in the first course must support the rest of the curriculum. For these reasons and more, a language-defined text is an important component in an introductory course.

The authors of this work believe top salespeople can be developed by applying the principles of hypnosis to sales presentations. They give a brief history of hypnosis and describe how it has been used in the counseling professions. They then show how the same techniques of trust building, wording, voice tone, and delivery can be applied to sales situations. Although this may sound like some shady sales gimmick, it is actually very good advice on the art of persuasion. Less general in approach and more technique-oriented than Kathy Aaronson’s Selling on the Fast Track ( LJ 5/15/89), this is recommended for larger libraries or those with large sales collections.

Exploring the continuum from normal personality traits to the diagnosis and treatment of severe cases of personality disorders, Personality Disorders in Modern Life, Second Edition is unique in its coverage of both important historical figures and contemporary theorists in the field. Its content spans all the major disorders-Antisocial, Avoidant, Depressive, Compulsive, Histrionic, Narcissistic, Paranoid, Schizoid, and Borderline-as well as their many subtypes. Attention to detail and in-depth discussion of the subtleties involved in these debilitating personality disorders make this book an ideal companion to the DSM-IV(TM).

The book also covers steering simulations and computational experiments; equipping old programs with graphical user interfaces; making computational Web applications; and creating interactive interfaces with a Maple/Matlab-like syntax to numerical applications in C/C++ or Fortran.

The highly qualified author argues that scripting with Python makes you much more productive, increases the reliability of your scientific work and lets you have more fun - on Unix, Windows and Macintosh.

All the tools and examples in this book are open source codes. The third edition is compatible with the new NumPy implementation and features updated information, correction of errors, and improved associated software tools.

The Writing Template Book is a practical how-to guide for academic writers. Because good writers automatically develop their own internal writing templates that impose clarity and structure on their material, this text provides template examples to help less experienced writers produce the reliable, replicable syntax that is essential to good writing. The Writing Template Book provides numerous examples and practice writing summaries, thesis sentences, introductions, conclusions, and the bodies of typical essays and papers.

A foreword by Ann M. Johns, Professor Emeritus at San Diego State University, positions the roles of templates in current writing pedagogy and describes the additional benefits of templates, such as opportunities to discuss vocabulary alternatives and their semantic values.

“Academic Writing and Publishing” will show academics (mainly in the social sciences) how to write and publish research articles. Its aim is to supply examples and brief discussions of recent work in all aspects of the area in short, sharp chapters. It should serve as a handbook for postgraduates and lecturers new to publishing. The book is written in a readable and lively personal style. The advice given is direct and based on up to date research that goes beyond that given in current textbooks. For example, the chapter on titles lists different kinds of titles and their purposes not discussed in other texts. The chapter on abstracts instructs the reader on writing structured abstracts from the start.

book coverI think you’ll find that it offers a fast, enjoyable way to discover the ins and outs of Microsoft Excel programming. Even if you don’t have the foggiest idea of what programming is all about, this book can help you make Excel jump through hoops in no time (well, it will take some time).

Unlike most programming books, this one is written in plain English, and even normal people can understand it. Even better, it’s filled with information of the “just the facts, ma’am” variety — and not the drivel you might need once every third lifetime.
